Do I need a NAS? An honest answer
NAS boxes are brilliant, but not everyone needs one. A straight answer to whether you actually do.
A NAS is a small always-on box of hard drives that lives on your home network. It’s genuinely useful — but it’s not for everyone.
You probably want one if…
- You’ve got lots of data (photos, video, several devices) and want fast local backups.
- You want a private cloud you control, without monthly fees.
- You’re happy with a weekend’s worth of setup.
You probably don’t if…
- You’ve got one laptop and just want it safe — a cloud backup is simpler and enough.
- You don’t want another device to maintain.
If you’re unsure, start with cloud (safe in ten minutes) and add a NAS later if you outgrow it.
